FRONTMAN KEYBOARD SHOWS:

JOHNNIE B. GOOD
A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGEND:
JOHNNIE JOHNSON

This show is led and directed by Johnnie’s biggest fan – Keyboard player – Danny Tsun, from Sydney, Australia — backed by an all-star band:
Rex Goh – Guitar , Harry Brus – Bass , Rosscoe Clark – Drums,
and Pat Powell & Milena Barrett – Vocals

In 1952, the Johnnie Johnson Trio had a residency @ the Cosmopolitan Club in St Louis. On New Years Eve, he called upcoming local guitarist, Chuck Berry to play– the rest is history!
Soon renaming it the Chuck Berry Trio, they recorded “Maybeline” for Chess Records in 1955, and were performing, touring, recording together for 20 years.

The true story is, whilst Berry became a global icon, receiving the credit, accolades, and royalties, Johnson was providing Berry with ideas, riffs, driving undercurrent, and jazz-influenced thundering full-handed top end, yet remained in the background, not on the credits, on many classic recordings – never receiving any recognition or royalties as songwriting partner or as sideman.

From the mid 80s, Johnson did make other contributions to the blues and rock and roll scene. Leader of Albert King’s rhythm section during King's most prolific and musically significant period, and was a cornerstone of the St. Louis blues scene with Oliver Sain, and other artists.
This however was very scattered.

A turning point n 1985, gave Johnson’s career a rebirth.
Thanks in part from the help of such notable names, Keith Richards, and Eric Clapton, was
Headhunted by Chuck Leavell & Richards, to perform as part of the documentary film & Live concert for Berry’s 60th birthday;"Hail Hail Rock & Roll!" - Numerous famous musicians were on the bill.
Johnnie's playing was on fire! Audiences and musicians from all over started to take notice!

Johnson was then recording playing and touring with the world's best major artists: Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Aerosmith, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, George Thorogood, Bonnie Raitt, Grateful Dead, and the list goes on!
He recorded several original albums, toured all over the world under his own name and was back doing what he did best.

Inducted in the “Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame” in 2001, and was granted his own Star on the St. Louis Walk Of Fame.
Johnnie sadly passed away in 2005, however, was performing right up till the end, more importantly he was finally acknowledged and recognised as a founding father of rock & roll music history!

Danny Tsun and an all-star band play a hand-picked selection of Johnnie’s best material as well as some classic Chuck Berry favourites that he featured on.
A long-time in the making -- This is the only tribute show in the world dedicated to the life, legacy and music of Johnnie Johnson.
It is also played and celebrated around Danny, and Johnnie's Birthday, in July.
A very special not to be missed event!

BACK STORY:
Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, several weeks premature, legally-blind, began his musical journey at age 9. In music class at school, violin was what the teacher wanted the students to play. After realizing Danny's hopeless fine-motor skills and sight impairment, she told him to go and learn Piano. This later proved to unlock a hidden talent.
Learning Classical, via the Suzuki method, it encouraged listening and ear-training, under the leadership of Astrid Van Der Vlise, who oddly enough, was also visually impaired.
As they both struggled to read the music, Danny soon began, silently, working out most of the music on his own by listening to the recordings. It didn't take long before he and everyone else realized a true inner natural ability!

One day, at around 12 years of age, hearing the sounds of Tommy Emmanuel's "Guitar Boogie", he immediately began to start playing along, and soon after was teaching himself, solely by listening! Soon he was picking up all his mum and dads vinyl, CD's and tapes, trying to play along. He soon discovered Jerry Lee Lewis, who became one of his main influences. When his teacher one day realized what he was working on, was his own original, she said, "play that at the next Christmas concert!"
At this particular event, Professor Chris O'Brian, from RPA Hospital was the guest MC.
Danny's name was called up to play, amongst all of other Astrid's students, but they had no idea that Danny would let loose, on a Jerry Lee Lewis-inspired rock n' roll piano-frenzied original "Shakin' In Sydney",
Busting out a knock-out performance, he got the biggest standing ovation he had in his life. Chris O'Brian then remarked: "This guy needs a shiny suit for Christmas! He's going to be star!" It was all over for anyone else that followed that day....

Diving in deep into the woodshed, researching, practicing and creating. Fats Domino, Little Richard, Beatles, Allman Brothers, Booker T, Jimmy Smith, BB King, John Lee Hooker, and just too many more, Danny was immersing himself into the Blues. His passion and true connection to his love of the Blues and related styles, and surprisingly, also a lover of Electronic Dance music, fueled by lots of challenges, led him to immerse in music.
At age 15, led to his decision of wanting to be a professional musician. "
At this time he was listening to Chuck Berry records, and discovered it was Johnnie Johnson way in the background on most solo's and most of the tunes, and soon began working his style out, all by ear! It changed him forever.

From aged 16-19, busking on Pitt Street in Sydney every Saturday, naturally, saw crowds gathered around, as he took to blistering blues, boogie, and rock n' roll piano covers, and, solo's for 4-5 hours straight!

Private parties, and jam nights at pubs were soon to follow as well as being allowed to sneak in to the Bridge Hotel in Sydney aged 16, to see much-loved idol, the "Johnnie B. Good" himself, legendary, Johnnie Johnson, Chuck Berry's keyboard player. That night changed his life, after meeting him in person, he was so inspired, he then tried to emulate every single chord, riff, stab, solo and style of Johnnie Johnson.
Although also idolizing Jerry Lee Lewis and other keyboard legends, Johnnie was, and still is his number #1 idol, for many reasons.

After a blues jam at the Empire Hotel, a previous Blues shrine in Sydney,
Danny was offered a residency at the Kauri Hotel in Glebe, every Friday, with his former band, "The Bluez Boyz", as well as being sideman with the "Tumbling Dice."

2003 he got to meet Johnnie and his wife Frances again at the Basement, and Narooma... but sadly not long after, Johnnie passed away.....

2011, 2016, and 2017, Danny was invited to play his own set at the Johnnie Johnson Festival in Fairmont, West Virginia, USA, as well as with the festival and his band - Bill Stalnaker & Nightmoves. Frances Johnson, and daughter Chastity Hudson, when hearing Danny's playing, stated "Danny is the closest to mimicking Johnnie Johnson than anyone in the world she has ever heard; has Johnnie's playing down to a fine art"
Chastity said "You sounded so close to my dad, its scary" .
Bill Stalnaker said Danny is "the thunder from down under!" and was invited to play with the house band, as well as his own set at the festival, as well as front page article in the WV Times.

Danny has had a hell of a lot of challenges and obstacles, both physically, and emotionally... from being bullied at school for his size and being who he is, to feeling isolated and left out fron the rest of his peers in adult world, and indeed his place in the world, not to mention lots of heartbreak - that's why Danny plays the Blues!
But the blues is universal - its apart of being human. But it's also a spiritual sound, and can be healing and make you feel good, or feel something that connects you to the music individually to take you on a higher journey.

From the first time hearing Bruce Springsteen when he was a baby, to hearing George Benson on his Dad's vinyl, or Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson on cassette, or any of the blues legends such as Albert King, and many more, Danny delves deep within his soul to emulate his vast musical influences through life struggles he calls "the blues".
Though the Blues is what's most in Danny's heart, he loves it all, from Blues, to Rave music... and why not, it all comes from the heart!

Since these early days, he has played at some of the beloved venues, with some of his idols!
Empire Hotel (once hailed as Sydney's home of the Blues), Soup Plus (which was Sydney's first and best Jazz dive), The Basement, Woollahra Hotel, The Mac, Annandale Hotel, Kiama Jazz & Blues Fest, Broadbeach Blues Fest, Goulburn Blues Fest, Lazybones, Django@Camelot, toured W.A with the P J O'Brien Band, touring New South Wales and Victoria with the Johnny Cass "Tombstone Bullets" album, Rhythm X Revival, Gail Page, Harry Brus, Ray Beadle, and Bryce Cohen,
as well as many other gigs all over Australia.

2018-2022 saw shows with the Marvelous Hearts, Rythm X Revival, the legendary Harry Brus Band, whilst still finding time to fit in his won shows.

Since 2020, Danny has been delving deep into DJ'ing, which has been an alternate side passion since an early age. Not too long after starting DJ'Jing and learning on digital, was granted his first spot Live for Sydney Rave History on their Mixathon in late 2022, held online on Twitch, streamed Live, from his new twitch dj page: twitch.tv/djtsunami_au , and has continued ever since.
He has been invited to play for other events; as well as his own, plus, streaming online - mixing different genresm and still playing the Keys!

Dedicated to his craft and passion, bringing people together, feeling the love together, one beat, one note, at a time/
Make sure you catch the Tsunami - Live!
